Latin American Map

Hey American I have a question for you?
What is the origin? of the stereotype of the “latin hot” regeaton dancing,
gangster and his dark skin. I’m from Chile, I am a real
latin American, Latinos are Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese.
Countries Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, city of Sao Paulo and Costa Rica
are the real latin American. The people of these countries is mostly
European descent. The natives in these countries does not exceed 5%
(in Uruguay there are no indigenous) and in Argentina and Chile there are not
black people.
I leave a map to see the reality of South America.

PD: Si no me entiende mala suerte, no hablo ingles, hablo español y use un traductor.

Not São paulo. We don’t even speak the same language.

Cuba After Communism $16.65 As once-powerful communist rulers flee their presidential palaces and centralized economies give way to free markets, the future of Latin America’s last socialist country hangs in the balance. In a fast-paced style that is both technically sophisticated and admirably free of economic jargon, Eliana Cardoso and Ann Helwege provide a much-needed road map for a peaceful and productive transition from communism to capitalism. They vividly depict the tough choices Cuba faces in the years ahead, and propose a series of reforms to ease Cuba through a transition to capitalism while preserving some legitimate gains–such as those in education and health care–that socialism has provided the Cuban people. The authors begin with the crux of Cuba’s predicament: it is an overly centralized single-crop economy that is fast running out of money, as it can no longer depend on privileged trade relations with the former Soviet Union. In this difficult period, Cuba faces the challenge of managing an increasingly chaotic, dysfunctional economy. Is Cuba’s transition to capitalism bound to yield another Haiti? Cardoso and Helwege answer with a resounding no. They begin their analysis with a fascinating history of the political roots of Cuba, from Cuban independence after the Spanish-American War to the rise of Castro and the development of a socialist economy. After discussing the various economic alternatives reflected in the experience of neighboring countries–models as diverse as Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, and Chile–the authors present a systematic program to help Cuba prevent economic decline and political chaos. Their plan involves rapid privatization and the attraction offoreign investment, while providing safeguards against the excesses and inequalities endemic to Latin American capitalism. |

Hoja de ruta, cultura y civilizaci n de Latinoam rica $95 Hoja de ruta is a textbook for college courses on Culture and Civilization of Latin America. This fifth edition of 564 pp is updated as of June 30, 2010. Written in a student friendly style, Hoja de ruta fifth edition includes the new political developments in Latin America which prompted a redesign of the political map of the continent where three political tendencies clearly stand out: a moderate left and center-left, the “Socialismo del Siglo XXI” and the center-right, as well as the factors that have furthered a new way of doing politics such as the cases of Marco Enríquez Ominami in Chile and Antanas Mockus in Colombia. In addition, it features a new chapter on the Hispanic population in the USA and the impact of the new Arizona immigration law, as well as the latest information on social issues such as the situation of minority groups (women, the GLBT population); the new faces of violence: narco violence and gender violence or feminicidios; the impact of drug trafficking on the economy of the countries producers of drug. Recommended as “the most engaging textbook of its kind in the market” for introducing the students, not only to a historical overview of Latin America, but most prominently, to an array of current topics of interest that range from politics to how to prepare delicious ethnic plates; from history to the role of women in the shaping of Latin American societies; from literature to reguetón or to the presence of Latin American films at the most prestigious international festivals; from art or religion to the use of flirtatious remarks. The sixteen chapters of the book follow a skillful, didactic strategy: the “hoja de ruta” or roadmap of the chapter; a self-evaluation, “¿Cuánto sabemos?”, of their knowledge on the topic; the chapter itself; a review guide with questions and puzzles, “¿Cuánto sabemos ahora?”; and finally, topics to think, research, write and discuss about. Ilan Stavans: Eight Conversations $12.95     ”Ilan Stavans has emerged as Latin America’s liveliest and boldest critic and most innovative cultural enthusiast,” states the Washington Post. And the New York Times described him as “the czar of Latino literature in the United States.” But his influential oeuvre doesn’t address Hispanic culture exclusively. It has also opened fresh new vistas into Jewish life globally, which has prompted the Forward to portray Stavans as “a maverick intellectual whose canonical work has already produced a whole array of marvels that are redefining Jewishness.”    Neal Sokol devoted almost a decade to the study of Stavans’s work. He applies his substantial knowledge to this candid, thought-provoking series of eight interviews. In them Stavans is caught at the vortex where his Mexican, Jewish, and American heritages meet. He discusses everything from the formative influences that shaped his worldview to anti-Semitism, Edmund Wilson, sexuality in Latin America, Gabriel García Márquez, and the fate of Yiddish. He also contrasts the role of intellectuals in advanced and developing societies, dwells on his admiration for Don Quixote and his passion for dictionaries, and reflects on his groundbreaking, controversial research on Spanglish—the hybrid encounter of English and Spanish that infuriates the Royal Academy in Madrid and also makes people describe Stavans as “the Salman Rushdie of the Hispanic world.”    Sokol shrewdly tests Stavans’s ideas and places them in context. By doing so, he offers a map to the heart and mind of one of our foremost thinkers today—an invaluable tool for his growing cadre of readers. |

Latin America After Neoliberalism $5.61 A primer on the social and economic changes sweeping across contemporary Latin America. Where have the economic policies succeeded? This is not a matter of ideology, it is political, technical, a matter of practical judgment. –Manuel Lopez Obrador, Mexican presidential election front-runner Beginning in the 1980s, Latin America became a laboratory for the ideas and policies of neoliberalism. Now the region is an epicenter of dissent from neoliberal ideas and resistance to U.S. economic and political dominance; Latin America’s political map is being redrawn. Already half a dozen progressive governments have swept into power–in Chile, Bolivia, Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, and Venezuela–and more may follow. Latin America After Neoliberalism is a fascinating look at what is perhaps the most politically dynamic region in the world–and an authoritative guide to the political movements and leaders that are part of this historic change. Published in conjunction with the North American Congress on Latin America (NACLA) and written by leading progressive analysts of the region, this book takes on the full spectrum of contemporary issues in Latin America, from political transformation to the role of women, indigenous people, and labor coalitions. Latin America After Neoliberalism attempts to make sense of the ongoing upheavals throughout the continent as it moves into the vanguard of an international rejection of neoliberalism for a new and viable progressive alternative. |
