Latin American Revolutionaries

Who is that 60′s Latin American revolutionary guy that stoners wear on their shirts yet have no idea who he is?
He has long hair looks pretty young wears a kinda french looking hat.
Probably has something to do with fighting capitalism and creating a corrupt socialist run government isolating its economy from the US and stuff (something hippies like alot). <== This is a shot in the dark assumption.
But really who is he, the guy thats on hippies tshirts and hes kinda looking up and to the side.
I see pancho villa a lot

Give Me Liberty: A Handbook For American Revolutionaries $5.89 As the practice of democracy becomes a lost art, Americans are increasingly desperate for a restored nation. Many have a general sense that the "system" is in disorder — if not on the road to functional collapse. But though it is easy to identify our political problems, the solutions are not always as clear. In Give Me Liberty: A Handbook for American Revolutionaries , bestselling author Naomi Wolf illustrates the breathtaking changes that can take place when ordinary citizens engage in the democratic system the way the founders intended and tells how to use that system, right now, to change your life, your community, and ultimately, the nation. |

The Hunted Revolutionaries by Peddie, Ian [Paperback] $141.79 Taking its title from a Thomas McGrath poem, The Hunted Revolutionaries argues that as the pressure on US leftwing writers grew in the wake of increasing disenchantment with communism at the end of the 1930s, so writers developed more nuanced forms of resistance that reflected the central importance of race and ethnicity in American society. While challenging the notion that leftwing writing was formulaic and propagandistic, this study also complicates the idea of a monolithic left, suggesting instead that there were many lefts in existence and attempts to impose unitary views on writers were as futile as explications that dismissed leftwing writing as partydirected articles of faith. Using the writing of Nelson Algren, Thomas McGrath, and Langston Hughes, this book connects their work to the lived experiences they chronicled, from the heady days of the 1930s through McCarthyism to the nuclear age and beyond. In so doing, it provides an innovative approach to leftwing writing, one that allows readers to better understand how the sense of humanism that inspired these writers was borne of an assurance that class matters. Author: Peddie, Ian Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 188 Publication Date: 2009/03/01 Language: English Dimensions: 9.00 x 6.00 x 0.43 inches |

Erotic Revolutionaries: Black Women Sexuality And Popular Culture $18.69 Why is there no "pro-sex" contingency in black feminist scholarship? Why do so few African-American scholars expound on issues celebrating female sexual pleasure? Perhaps the answers to these questions reside within a discursive matrix of sexual repression commonly referred to as the politics of respectability and its rein on black sexual politics. In Erotic Revolutionaries: Black Women Sexuality and Popular Culture sociologist Shayne Lee steers black sexual politics toward a more sex-positivetrajectory. Introducing feminist analysis to a conceptual ménage à trois of scripting theory media representation and black sexual politics Lee considers the ways in which the feminist quest for social and sexual equality can delve into popular cultureto see the production of subversive scripts for female sexuality and erotic agency. Whereas most feminist scholarship underscores how sexual representations of black women in media are exploitative and problematic Lee portrays black female celebritieslike Janet Jackson Beyoncé Karrine Steffans Zane Tyra Banks Juanita Bynum Sheryl Underwood and many more as feminists of sorts who afford women access to cultural tools to renegotiate sexual identity and celebrate sexual agency and empowerment. Exile: A Novel $9.99 I began to love my own country now that I was forbidden to enter it. -Carlos Romero EstevezFor Carlos Romero Estevez, freedom from danger means a life in exile. Rescued from his home in a Latin American military dictatorship – where his writings have been banned and he is wanted by the state – the poet and journalist is brought to a new home in Vancouver. His rescuers, a group devoted to helping oppressed writers, think they’ve found a hero, a posterboy. Carlos thinks he’s found a new life, new freedom, and new, powerful friends. But soon everyone’s illusions are dispelled, and Carlos finds life in exile to be a new kind of prison. His arranged job as a writer-in-residence at the university fails to produce the expected best-selling memoir. And Carlos begins to realise that his powerful new friends are simply unable to give him the kind of life he knew before his imprisonment, when he associated with the elite writers of his nation – as well as notorious revolutionaries. In prose that is at once delicate and passionate, Ann Ireland’s Exile is the work of an author in full control of her considerable talents. |

Guerrilla Warfare $8.99 Che Guevara, the larger-than-life hero of the 1959 revolutionary victory that overturned the Cuban dictatorship, believed that revolution would also topple the imperialist governments in Latin America. Che’s call to action, his proclamation of ‘invincibility’-the ultimate victory of revolutionary forces-continues to influence the course of Latin American history and international relations. His amazing life story has lifted him to almost legendary status. This edition of Che’s classic work Guerrilla Warfare contains the text of his book, as well as two later essays titled ‘Guerrilla Warfare: A Method’ and ‘Message to the Tricontinental.’ A detailed introduction by Brian Loveman and Thomas M. Davies, Jr., examines Guevara’s text, his life and political impact, the situation in Latin America, and the United States’ response to Che and to events in Latin America. Loveman and Davies also provide in-depth case studies that apply Che’s theories on revolution to political situations in seven Latin American countries from the 1960s to the present. Also included are political chronologies of each country discussed in the case studies and a postscript tying the analyses together. This book will help students gain a better understanding of Che’s theoretical contribution to revolutionary literature and the inspiration that his life and Guerrilla Warfare have provided to revolutionaries since the 1960s. This volume is an invaluable addition to courses in Latin American studies and political science. |

Hero of Hispaniola: America’s First Black Diplomat, Ebenezer D. Bassett $40 We know Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice as two of today’s most high-profile African American political figures, but who paved the way for these notable diplomats? More than one hundred and thirty years ago, Ebenezer D. Bassett served as the first black United States ambassador. In the midst of the aftermath of the Civil War, the U.S. government broke the color barrier by naming this leading educator, abolitionist, and activist to the controversial post of ambassador to the hemisphere’s Black Republic – Haiti. For the first time, a nation founded on the principle that all men are created equal would have as its representative abroad someone previously less than equal under the law. This movement toward equality proved to be a force impossible to turn back, leading to a wider acceptance of blacks in U.S. foreign policy. This book lays bare the struggles Bassett faced as a pioneer of racial integration, helping to secure Bassett’s legacy as the first African American political figure, a man who not only altered the American political structure, but led the way for all future civil rights advocates. This book highlights Bassett’s achievements, which directly contributed to the racial revolution in the U.S. These include being appointed the first African American diplomat and chief of a U.S. diplomatic mission, leading the integration of public schools, and fighting for equal rights alongside revolutionaries such as Frederick Douglass. Bassett played a critical role in foreign affairs during the late 19th century, the formative years of American expansionism in Latin America and the Caribbean. 2008 marks the 100th anniversary of Bassett’s death. Though he is long forgotten by history, his legacy as an innovator, activist, and diplomat lives on, and his life story—a tale of intelligence, integrity, and bravery—serves as an inspiration to patriotic Americans of all races and backgrounds. Hero of Hispaniola secures Bassett’s legacy as the first |

Learning Democracy: Citizen Engagement and Electoral Choice in Nicaragua, 1990-2001 $76.88 Historically, Nicaragua has been mired in poverty and political conflict, yet the country has become a model for the successful emergence of democracy in a developing nation. Learning Democracy tells the story of how Nicaragua overcame an authoritarian government and American interventionism by engaging in an electoral revolution that solidified its democratic self-governance. By analyzing nationwide surveys conducted during the 1990, 1996, and 2001 Nicaraguan presidential elections, Leslie E. Anderson and Lawrence C. Dodd provide insight into one of the most unexpected and intriguing recent advancements in third world politics. They offer a balanced account of the voting patterns and forward-thinking decisions that led Nicaraguans to first support the reformist Sandinista revolutionaries only to replace them with a conservative democratic regime a few years later. Addressing issues largely unexamined in Latin American studies, Learning Democracy is a unique and probing look at how the country’s mass electorate moved beyond revolutionary struggle to establish a more stable democratic government by realizing the vital role of citizens in democratization processes. |

Steeped in the voting behavior literature as it has developed during the last half-century in the United States, Learning Democracy also offers broader lessons having to do with how individuals struggle to make decisions when institutions are developing. A classic of how to do electoral analysis through time and polls, this book is likely to  likely to include people interested in voting behavior, democratic development, Latin American politics, and decision-making. It will serve as a model of how to do comparative research.”–Bryan D. Jones, author of Politics and the Architecture of Choice |
